Confirmation Class Requirements
This year of study will be divided into four quarters, with all specified expectations except the leadership segment to be met during each quarter. Service hours will be reported to pastor or teacher as they are completed, with the person receiving assistance documenting time and work provided by the student. The quarterly requirements are as follows:
Requirement: Worship Attendance. Requirement met when student attends and participates in worship a minimum of three times each quarter. Participation includes attendance, assisting with worship (ushering, reading lessons, and / or acolyting), and completing sermon notes. This participation in worship brings the student to an understanding that a congregation's very existence begins in worshipping together regularly.
Requirement: Class attendance. Requirement met when student attends and participates in every class held for two years. Any missed classes must be made up by arrangement with the class instructor. This commitment to education brings the student to an understanding that education and growth in faith is an expected part of a Christian's life of faith.
Requirement: Memorization. Requirement met when student demonstrates that s/he has memorized the Ten Commandments, Lord's Prayer, Apostles' Creed, is familiar with all parts of Luther's Small Catechism (including the sacraments), and can explain the meaning of each commandment, petition, and article from the Small Catechism in their own words or in the words of Luther's explanation.
Requirement: Community Action. Requirement met when student participates in community service projects. Each student is to document a minimum of five hours per quarter; one hour may be for the benefit of an extended family member (this does NOT include helping with chores at home!) for which the student receives no pay. The remaining four hours each quarter must be for non-family, and must also be without pay. A list of suggested activities is available from the pastor. This commitment to service brings the student to an understanding that congregational life and its mission is greater than our immediate families and includes the larger community as well as all days of the week.
Requirement: Leadership. Requirement met during the last half of the second year of study when students as a group plan and conduct a Sunday morning worship service. Assistance in this service may be provided by the pastor and / or the Worship Committee, but shall be the primary responsibility of the second-year class. This experience in leadership brings the student to an understanding that all are called to share their faith using the gifts they have been given.
This set of requirements shall be provided to each student and each parent at the beginning of the year, and quarterly updates shall be provided to students and parents for verification.
